ALGHERO - SARDINIA

SARDINIA is famous for its beautiful white-sand beaches, breathtaking rose-colored cliffs, and vast unspoilt countryside. Sardinia's ancient grottos, marine caves, and Nuraghic archaeological sites offer another vantage point to view the island's wonders.

Sardinia has a rich history and unique culture. The fish and seafood are fresh and local specialties are boundless - from the Mirto liquor made with the Mediterranean Mirto berry, to the Seadas (fried pasta pastries filled with cheeses and covered in melted honey or sugar).

Situated on the shores of a beautiful bay on the north-west coast of the island, ALGHERO is one of the most charming towns of Sardinia. Once under Aragonese rule, it was a fortress town and parts of its old city walls remain, preserving the characteristics of the Catalan-Aragonese period, which can be seen in its architecture and heard in the Catalan language, which is still spoken.

Alghero offers a range of attractions, from its charming historic center walled against the sea, to the rolling countryside dotted vineyards and herds of grazing sheep, to the cascades of sandy beaches, breath-taking cliffs, archaeological sites.

Both land and sea offer spectacular views along the 75 kilometer coast which spans from the limestone promontory of Capo Caccia southward to the beach of La Speranza.

The harbor is ideal for sailing and fishing, and the coastline is nicknamed the Coral Riviera for its rich presence of the red coral which is visible at just 4 meters and unique to all the Mediterranean area.

The surrounding area is of archaeological and natural interest, for example visits to the Nuraghe of Palmavera, to the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju, to Monte Doglia and Porto Conte. Wandering along the country paths amidst the Mediterranean bush you come across very rare examples of vegetation like the Pheonician Junuper. It is also possible to spot magnificent examples of fauna such as the griffon, the fallow deer, the albino donkeys and even the moufflon which all live in protected areas and make up but a few attractions of this extraordinary Mediterranean habitat.

The Grottoes of Neptune with their impressive caverns of natural lace work of stalactites and stalagmites, dripping vaults and saline waters create an unreal world in the island's most beautiful and famous caves.
