The Grotta di Nereo (Nereo's Cave) takes its name from the myth of the parents of the Nereidi. The mythological name was deservedly given to this heavenly marina by its discoverers. In realty, this cave is more legendary and mythical than any other in this zone. Above all it is considered, at the end of a time, at least our to our knowledge, there are no others signalling this merit, the largest marine cave of all of the Mediterranean and of all Europe. The period of its discovery coincided with the advent of the modern underwater recreation, and in 1957, it was entirely found and recovered, truly as a Red Coral deposit. With an orientation that goes from south to north, it is realy under the majestic and massive Cape Caccia, takes form with its large extension that initiate in the area underlying Punta dell'Asino (Donkey Cape), placed southwest, that is really the section emerging and that divides like this in the part submersed two spectacular openings that are from the introduction at the enormous cavities from the famous cave that pentrates in the limestone rock of Cape Caccia. For its dimensoins, the notable extensions of internal passages, the articulate branches, that always bring and anyhow toward a exit, rendering even more safety, it is possible to make numerous trips with taking differing routes. The enchanting principal course within the enormous Cape Caccia it developed for a length around 300 meters, schematically like a great “A”, in how the tunnel newly takes back, and at a depth of about 31 meters, externally, and the two arems are united from an alterior tunnel at two levels, the deepest, 25 meters, with the rocky and particular floors and unique pebbles of white limestone and red coral accomodate often large lobsters and crustacceans.
