OTHER ACTIVITIES
Alghero offers a range of attractions...from its charming historic center walled against the sea, to the rolling countryside dotted vineyards and herds of grazing sheep, to the cascades of sandy beaches, breath-taking cliffs, archaeological sites.
The Historic Center
Adjacent to the bay and beaches, lies the enchanting historic center of Alghero. It has a distinct Catalan feel due to its history of being under Aragonese rule, and this is reflected in its architecture, the city walls, the towers and the Gothic Aragonese bell towers. The main highlights of the town, other than the city's ancient defences, are the impressive domed cathedral, two dazzling palaces and wide range of restaurants, shops and bars. Walk along the fortified walls, listen to the sea break against the rocks and watch the sun set over Capo Caccia and you will truly experience the majestic serenity unique to the old town of Alghero.
The Cliffs of Capo Caccia
This is a majestic eye-catching promontory with high limestone cliffs, which fall to the sea. The view of the bay of Alghero from here is exhilarating. Deep within the promontory is the Cave of Neuptune (see below), which the Duke of Buckingham described as "the miracle of the Gods."
Cave of Neptune
You can take a boat trip to the Caves of Neptune, outsanding sea caves below a sheer cliff face. Accessible by boat, trips depart regularly from Alghero's port and the return journey takes approximately two and a half hours. Or by land, visitors can follow the path on the western side of the Cape and taking the Escale del Cabirol steps, which descend 110 meters to the entrance to the caves.
You can take a guided tour through the vast cavern, lined with stalactites and stalagmites surrounding the cave's Lake Lamarmora, one of the largest salt water lakes in Europe.
Beaches
The coastline is lined with beautiful beaches. The Maria Pia beach is a beautiful sandy bay which fuses into a majestic pinewood park.
The white sand beaches of Lazzaretto and Le Bombarde offer superb views of the Coral Riviera.
Beyond Capo Caccia the orange sand beach of Porto Ferro tucked within rock cliffs, is always with stunning crashing waves.
Stintino, the north-western point of the island, has some fantastic beaches, including the almost tropical Pelosa.
To the south of Alghero, the coastline tends to be more rocky, but is excellent for snorkelling and scuba diving. La Speranza is a sandy beach about eight kilometres south of Alghero.
Vineyards of Sella and Mosca
The large vineyards and winery of Sella and Mosca offer an informative and interesting excursion. They offer guided tours followed by wine tastings daily.
Agritourism
For a traditional Sardinian meal complete with several hearty courses of pastas, meats, and traditional breads, cheeses, wines and desserts spend an afternoon at an agritourism farm in the countryside.
The Bay of Porto Conte
The largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean with its calm waters is an ideal spot for swimming and diving. Porticciolo Picturesque and secluded bay with a beautiful beach, dominated by a tower and fortress dating back to 1600. 17 kilometers from Alghero on the road from Capo Caccia.
Sea Urchin Excursion
The Director of Adventure-Diving, Marco Busdraghi, is also one of the few divers on the island permitted to dive for sea urchins. Upon arrangement, enjoy a day at the shore while Marco dives for sea urchins, and then feast on his catch with bread and wine!
The Nuraghe of Palmavera
This is an extremely interesting settlement consisting of a complex of excavated nuraghe, which date back to 1100 years B.C. The complex was abandoned in the 5th century B.C. due to fire, but shows the different phases of social life and political organization of the tribal community. Of particular interest is the "Reunion Hut" where political debates and magical-religious cults were held.
Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju
The pre-nuragic complex of tombs is one of the most extensive necropolises in Sardinia and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. It is here that an ancient fishing population of the Neolithic era, 3000 B.C., buried their dead. There are various forms of tombs, several which were places of cult.
